Places to explore in Argyll and ButeScotland · Highlands and Islands

Sea lochs and long peninsulas cut Argyll into a ragged western coast, scattered offshore into the islands of Mull, Islay, Jura and Bute. This was the heart of Dál Riata, the early Scottish kingdom whose kings were inaugurated at the hillfort of Dunadd above the burial cairns of Kilmartin Glen. Iona carries the abbey from which Columba's monks brought Christianity to the north, and Staffa holds the basalt columns of Fingal's Cave. Inland, Kilchurn Castle stands at the head of Loch Awe, and the tidal race of the Corryvreckan roars between Jura and Scarba.
