A shingle causeway called the Doirlinn links Davaar Island to the mainland near Kildalloig, a couple of miles from Campbeltown; it is only safe to cross around low tide, so check tide times before setting out rather than judging it by eye. Once across, a track leads north to a lighthouse built in 1854 by the engineers David and Thomas Stevenson, a walk there and back of the best part of an hour. The cliffs on the east side are cut through with seven sea caves; the last has a painting of the Crucifixion, made in secret in 1887 by Archibald MacKinnon, a Campbeltown art teacher who returned twice more, in 1902 and 1934, to restore his own work. Campbeltown itself grew rich on herring and whisky, and distilleries including Springbank still work there today.
