More than 30 distilleries once worked in Campbeltown, near the foot of Kintyre, and the town called itself the whisky capital of the world. Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle are the three still going. The Picture House opened in 1913 as one of the first purpose-built cinemas in Scotland, and since 1935 its auditorium has had little plaster buildings round the walls, like a Mediterranean courtyard, under a painted sky with moving clouds. It still shows films. At low tide you can walk out along a shingle causeway, about 40 minutes, to Davaar Island at the mouth of the loch, where Archibald MacKinnon painted the Crucifixion on a cave wall in 1887. Check the tide times before you cross.
