Your privacy
The short version: the Albion Guide has no accounts, no tracking cookies and no advertising, and it doesn't sell or share anything about you. Here's the longer version, in plain English.
What stays on your device
Two small things are remembered in your own browser, using its local storage: whether you chose the light or dark theme, and the places you star with the save button. They never leave your device and we can't see them. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.
Finding places near you
When you look up a town, village or postcode, or press "Use my location", the matching happens in your own browser. Your postcode and your location are never sent to us or to anyone else. Your location is rounded to about 100 metres, and a postcode is only ever looked up to its area (about a kilometre across), and either is kept only in the part of the page address after the "#" mark, which browsers don't send to websites. To build the list, your browser downloads the same small files for everyone in that part of the country, each covering a patch roughly 25 kilometres across.
Counting visits
We count page views so we know which pages are useful. The counting uses no cookies, doesn't store your IP address, and can't identify you or follow you around other websites. We only ever see totals, such as how many people visited a page this week.
Services your browser talks to
Like any website, some pages ask other services for pieces of the page. When that happens, those services see the usual technical details of the request, such as your IP address and browser type:
- Netlify hosts the site, keeps standard server logs for security and reliability, and receives newsletter sign-ups.
- Cloudflare stores and delivers our photos (from photos.albionguide.com) on every page that shows one.
- OpenFreeMap supplies the background map, andAmazon Web Services supplies the open terrain data used for hill shading, whenever a map is showing.
- GoatCounter does the visit counting described above. It sets no cookies and doesn't keep your IP address.
- Instagram provides the photo on the few place pages that show an Instagram post instead of our own photo. Instagram's own privacy policy applies to that embed.
Links that leave the site, such as "open in Google Maps" or a place's official website, take you to services with their own privacy policies.
Letters from Albion, our newsletter
If you sign up for the newsletter, we keep your email address, the page you signed up on and the time, and use them only to send you the newsletter. The sign-up form is handled by Netlify, which hosts the site, and the list itself is kept withEmailOctopus, which sends the emails. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can write to us and we'll take you off. We never sell or share the list.
If you email us, we use your message and address only to reply and keep a record of the conversation. We don't add you to any mailing list unless you ask.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask what personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct or delete it. In practice that's only ever an email conversation. Write tohello@albionguide.com. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to theInformation Commissioner's Office.
