These are the additional Sites of Special Scientific Interest beyond the reserves above — notified for a particular scientific interest rather than for visiting, so many are small, overlap a larger reserve, or aren't set up for public access.

What these designations mean

National Nature Reserves

The flagship reserves, established to protect the country's most important habitats and species and to let people experience them. In England they are managed by or with Natural England, with equivalents run by NatureScot in Scotland and Natural Resources Wales in Wales. Most are set up for both nature and quiet public enjoyment.

Country parks

Accessible countryside near towns, made for a day out — walking, picnics, family visits — rather than strict nature protection. They were introduced by the Countryside Act 1968. The parks listed here come from Natural England's register and so cover England only, though country parks exist in Wales and Scotland too under separate registers.

Sites of Special Scientific Interest

The legal bedrock of nature protection: thousands of sites notified for a specific scientific interest — a rare plant, an insect, a geological feature, a particular habitat. Because they are chosen for that special interest rather than for visiting, many are small, overlap a larger reserve, or aren't set up for public access, which is why they sit behind the "see more" control above.
