Fancy a forest walk with a view? Whinlatter, above Braithwaite, calls itself England’s only true mountain forest, spread across the fellside high above Bassenthwaite. There are waymarked walking and mountain-bike trails, a Go Ape course, and in spring an osprey viewpoint linked by camera to the nesting birds down on the lake. There’s a visitor centre and café, and a parking charge at the main car park.
