The Speddings have owned Mirehouse for generations, and their poet friends came to stay — Tennyson, Southey, Edward FitzGerald and Thomas Carlyle among them. The 17th-century house sits near Bassenthwaite Lake, and the grounds have a walled bee garden, a poetry walk and a path down to the water. St Bega’s church is a stroll away along the shore.
