Keswick is the main town of the northern Lakes, a grey slate-built place on the shore of Derwentwater beneath Skiddaw. There’s a Saturday market under the old Moot Hall, the lakeside Theatre by the Lake, and the Derwent Pencil Museum on the site of the works that made graphite pencils here for generations. Friar’s Crag, one of the classic lake viewpoints, is a short stroll from the centre. The railway closed in 1972, so it’s buses or a car to get here now.
