The Pheasant is an old coaching inn near Bassenthwaite lake, its little oak-panelled bar barely changed in decades and hung with sporting prints. Set between the water and Whinlatter forest, it’s a civilised base with rooms, close to Mirehouse and the osprey viewpoints. A fine place for a quiet pint away from the busier honeypots.
