Lorton is really two hamlets, High and Low Lorton, in the quiet green vale between Cockermouth and Buttermere. The Lorton Yew, an ancient tree beside the beck, was celebrated in a poem by Wordsworth and is reckoned to be many centuries old. The village church of St Cuthbert stands nearby.
