Cockermouth takes its name from the point where the River Cocker joins the Derwent, and it’s one of 51 towns picked out as a ‘gem’ by the Council for British Archaeology back in 1964. The main draw is Wordsworth House, the handsome Georgian home where William and Dorothy Wordsworth were born, now cared for by the National Trust. The town is also home to Jennings Brewery and the Bitter End, a good little pub with its own beers.
