Buttermere is a tiny village on the neck of land between two lakes, Buttermere and Crummock Water, ringed by High Stile and Alfred Wainwright’s beloved Haystacks. The gentle circuit of Buttermere lake is one of the loveliest low walks in the Lakes. Two inns, the Bridge Hotel and the Fish, sit at the centre; the road out east climbs the steep Newlands Pass back towards Keswick.
