The last working slate mine in England sits right at the top of Honister Pass, still quarrying Westmorland green slate. You can go underground on a guided tour of the old workings, or tackle England’s first via ferrata, clipping onto a fixed cable to scale the crag the miners once climbed. Both need booking ahead and reasonable footwear, and the underground trips stay a steady chilly temperature, so bring a layer. There’s a shop and café at the top too.
