Steep slate-mine pass linking Borrowdale and Buttermere.
Honister Pass is one of the steepest roads in the Lakes, a narrow line of slate crags and hairpins linking Borrowdale with Buttermere. It’s a fine drive or a stiff cycle, though the single-track sections and 1-in-4 pitches ask for care and patience. At the summit sits the Honister Slate Mine, the last of its kind still working, which makes a good excuse to stop.
