The Fish Hotel at Buttermere is bound up with the tale of Mary Robinson, the ‘Maid of Buttermere’, a landlord’s daughter whose beauty drew Georgian tourists and, in 1802, a bigamist conman. Today it’s an old coaching inn with a walkers’ bar between the two lakes, well placed for the lakeside round or the pull up to Haystacks. Rooms if you want to linger.
