The Sands of Forvie form one of the least-disturbed dune systems in Britain, spilling along the coast at the mouth of the River Ythan. Four kinds of tern breed here, along with eider ducks, and a ruined medieval kirk lies half-buried in the sand — the remains of a village said to have been overwhelmed by blowing dunes. It’s a NatureScot reserve, free and open, with paths in from Collieston and the Ythan. Newburgh Seal Beach faces it across the estuary.
