Places to explore in AberdeenshireScotland · North East Scotland

Granite underlies Aberdeenshire, from the quarried grey of its buildings to the high Grampian plateau in the west. There the land climbs through Deeside and Lochnagar towards the Cairngorm massif, with the royal estate of Balmoral and old Caledonian pinewoods strung along the river. The distinctive tor-topped ridge of Bennachie is the landmark of the lowlands. The coast is all cliff and stack, dropping to the sea at the Bullers of Buchan and beneath the shattered walls of Slains Castle and clifftop Dunnottar. This is castle country, and few counties hold more of them.
