The showpiece at Pitmedden is the Great Garden, a formal 17th-century layout of box-edged parterres re-created in the mid-20th century from a 1647 plan of the gardens at Holyrood. The patterns are best seen from the terrace above, thousands of bedding plants picked out in swirls, with a sundial dated 1675 and long herbaceous borders down the walls. There’s a farming museum too. National Trust for Scotland, open seasonally, admission charge.
