There is a lot of loose granite on Derry Cairngorm, a Munro — a Scottish hill over 3,000 feet — of 1,156m in the heart of the Cairngorms. The upper slopes are covered in pale boulders, slow going in either direction, and the summit is a stony dome rather than a peak. It is usually taken in on the way to or from Ben Macdui, its higher neighbour to the west, on the long approach up Glen Derry from the Linn of Dee. It is a fair way from the nearest road, so a settled forecast and a full day both help.
