Loch Morlich sits in the pine woods of Glenmore, ringed by old Scots pines with the Cairngorm plateau climbing behind it, a few miles east of Aviemore in the Cairngorms. What surprises people is the beach — a real stretch of sand on the eastern shore, unusual this high in the mountains and popular on warm days, cold water and all. The loch is a centre for watersports, with sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding on the open water. Paths lead off into the surrounding forest and up Cairn Gorm and its neighbours, and the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre nearby keeps Britain’s only free-ranging reindeer herd on the slopes above.
