Fettercairn distillery sits at the foot of the Cairngorms in the Mearns, founded back in 1824. Its quirk is a cooling ring that trickles water down the outside of the stills during distillation, meant to give a lighter, purer spirit. There’s a visitor centre and tours; it’s worth booking ahead. Laurencekirk station is about 7km east.
