Brechin’s round tower is the striking thing here: a tall, slender Irish-style bell tower attached to the cathedral, built around 1000 AD and one of only two of its kind left in Scotland. See the two together at Brechin Cathedral. The town also runs the Caledonian Railway, a heritage line with steam and diesel trips in summer. It’s off the main network, though — the nearest mainline station is Montrose, about 11km east.
