The gardens at House of Pitmuies, near Guthrie in eastern Angus, are a well-known set of walled gardens beside a laird’s house. Long herbaceous borders, an alpine meadow, clipped hedges and woodland and riverside walks make for an easy hour or two. Open to visitors with an admission charge — a lovely, low-key garden stop away from the busier estates. Arbroath is the nearest station, about 11km to the south-east.
