Arbroath is a red-sandstone harbour town on the Angus coast, best known for the Arbroath smokie — haddock hot-smoked over hardwood, still done in the sheds around the harbour. Up at the top of the High Street stand the ruins of Arbroath Abbey, where the Declaration of Arbroath, Scotland’s 1320 assertion of independence, was drafted; it’s cared for by Historic Environment Scotland. The smokie actually started up the coast at Auchmithie. The station sits right in the centre of town.
