The walled garden at Edzell Castle is one of the loveliest in Scotland. Laid out in 1604 by Sir David Lindsay, this ‘Pleasance’ has its walls carved with three sets of relief panels — the cardinal virtues, the liberal arts and the planetary deities — set above recessed boxes planted with flowers. It sits beside the ruined castle just outside Edzell; a Historic Environment Scotland site, open all year with an admission charge.
