Montrose is a former royal burgh set on a narrow neck of land between the North Sea and the Montrose Basin, a near-circular tidal lagoon that fills and empties with the tide. The basin is a Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve, and in autumn tens of thousands of pink-footed geese roost there — there’s a visitor centre on its southern edge. The town has handsome older streets and a wide High Street, with the station close to the centre.
