The novelist Lewis Grassic Gibbon, author of Sunset Song, is buried in the churchyard here at Arbuthnott, in the Mearns country he wrote about. St Ternan’s itself is a rare, largely intact 13th-century church, and there’s a small centre in the village telling his story. Open and free to visit. Laurencekirk station is about 9km to the west.
