Insch is a Garioch village under the distinctive cone of Dunnideer hill, crowned by the shattered arch of a ruined medieval castle — a landmark for miles around and a short, sharp climb from the village. The countryside around is rich in Pictish stones and hillforts. Insch has its own station on the Aberdeen–Inverness line, which is handy.
