Pennan is a single row of houses pinned between the cliff and the sea, best known as Ferness in the 1983 film Local Hero. Fans still make the trip for the red phone box on the front — a listed box, though not actually the prop used on screen. Parking up top is tight and you walk steeply down to the harbour, so go prepared. A cracking little spot all the same. Crovie sits just along the coast.
