Troup Head is the only place gannets nest on the Scottish mainland — everywhere else they choose islands. From spring to late summer the RSPB reserve’s cliffs near Gardenstown are packed and noisy with them, along with kittiwakes, guillemots and puffins. A field path leads out to the clifftop; keep well back from the unfenced edge. Pennan is just along the coast.
