The Irish yews at Crathes have been clipped since 1702, and they divide the walled garden into eight themed rooms of borders and colour. The turreted 16th-century tower house sits above, on Royal Deeside near Banchory; the garden and grounds stay open through the year while the castle keeps shorter seasonal hours. It’s run by the National Trust for Scotland, with an admission charge. Stonehaven station is about 17km to the south-east.
