Sandend is a golden crescent of beach beside its old fishing village on the Banffshire coast, sheltered enough for families but with a reef break that draws surfers when the swell’s up. The huddle of cottages and the little harbour are worth a look too. Free and open; Keith station is about 19km inland. Sunnyside Beach and the ruin of Findlater Castle are a short walk east along the coast.
