Places to explore in Isle of WightEngland · South East England
A diamond of chalk and greensand set off the Hampshire coast, the Isle of Wight is cut by a central chalk ridge that runs west to end in the sea stacks of The Needles. Its southern shore crumbles in landslips below the Undercliff, and the cliffs give up dinosaur bones. Charles I spent his last months a prisoner in Carisbrooke Castle; Victoria and Albert built their seaside home at Osborne. The Romans farmed here too, leaving the mosaics of Brading Roman villa. The Coastal Path rings the whole shore, past Compton Bay and the eastern resorts.
