A jagged granite outcrop in mid-Cornwall with the shell of a medieval hermitage chapel perched right on top

Roche Rock rises abruptly out of the mid-Cornwall countryside, a craggy granite outcrop with the ruined chapel of St Michael built into and on top of it. The chapel dates from the 15th century and served as a hermitage; an iron ladder bolted to the rock once let people climb to what remains, though the landowner closed it off in 2024 after an injury and it stays shut for now. From the top there are wide views over the old china-clay country around St Austell. The rock is a protected wildlife site (an SSSI) as well as a scheduled monument. The Eden Project is a few miles to the south-east if you are looping the area together.
