If you like your gardens wild rather than manicured, Tregrehan is a working plantsman’s arboretum near the Eden Project, still run by the Carlyon family who’ve gardened here since the 18th century. Magnolias and rhododendrons crowd a steep, sheltered valley, many grown from seed brought back by 19th- and 20th-century plant hunters. It opens several days a week from mid-March to October, with an admission charge; Par station is about 2.5km east.
