Yewbarrow Woods is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Cumbria, covering 1.1 km². It is one of 235 SSSIs in the county. The surrounding countryside is part of the Lake District National Park.

Rusland Valley Mosses and Morecambe Bay are among the SSSIs within 3.7 km. For arrivals by rail, Grange-over-Sands Station is about 10.2 km to the south-east.
