Graythwaite Hall itself stays private, but its six acres of woodland garden open every spring and summer. Thomas Mawson laid them out in 1889, mixing formal terraces near the house with informal drifts of rhododendron and azalea running down to a stream — best in May when they’re in full flower. It’s open April to August on an honesty-box basis, no booking needed. Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s old farmhouse, is a few kilometres north near Far Sawrey.
