Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top, the little farmhouse at Near Sawrey, with the earnings from her first books, and it turns up in several of them almost unchanged. The National Trust keeps it much as she left it, and the Tower Bank Arms next door — which appears in her books — still pulls pints. It gets busy, so timed tickets for the house are worth booking ahead. Far Sawrey is a short stroll on towards the ferry.
