The lake steamers dock at Bowness, which makes it the busiest spot on Windermere: the front is lined with tearooms, galleries and the World of Beatrix Potter attraction. It’s the obvious place to pick up a cruise or hire a rowing boat, though expect crowds through summer. Windermere station is under 2km up the hill to the north-east, and Windermere town itself is a short walk on.
