The Kings Arms faces the little square in car-free Hawkshead, a 17th-century inn with low beams and open fires in the middle of one of the Lakes’ prettiest villages. It’s an easy base for Grizedale and Tarn Hows, does food all day and keeps rooms overlooking the square. Nearest railhead is Windermere, with buses running via the ferry.
