Whitewashed medieval village of Potter and Wordsworth.
Open accessNational Trust land — free to wander
One of the prettiest Lakes villages, Hawkshead is a knot of whitewashed cottages, little squares and stone archways kept largely free of cars. Wordsworth went to school at the old grammar school here, and the National Trust’s Beatrix Potter Gallery occupies a building once used by her husband, the solicitor William Heelis. Windermere station is about 6km east; Near Sawrey and Hill Top lie a short drive to the south.
