The Beatrix Potter Gallery shows her original watercolours and book drawings in a former solicitor’s office in Hawkshead — fittingly, the very practice once run by her husband, William Heelis. The pictures on show change each year, so a repeat visit won’t be the same twice. It’s National Trust, with admission, and sits right in the middle of the village, easy to fold into a wander round the whitewashed lanes.
