The whitewashed church on the hill above Hawkshead is St Michael & All Angels, long and low above the rooftops. Inside, biblical texts painted in decorative borders cover the walls — some first done in 1680 and repainted over the years. A chapel has stood here since the 12th century. Free to visit, and a two-minute climb from the square where the young Wordsworth once went to school.
