The Old Man looms over Coniston, the fell that gives the village its shape and once fed its copper mines. John Ruskin spent his last decades across the water at Brantwood and lies buried in St Andrew’s churchyard here; Donald Campbell died on Coniston Water in 1967 chasing the water-speed record in Bluebird, and is buried in the village too. The National Trust’s Steam Yacht Gondola still runs cruises from the pier.
