Brantwood was John Ruskin’s home for the last thirty years of his life, on the quieter eastern shore of Coniston Water looking across to the fells. Ruskin laid out a run of steep, experimental gardens climbing the hillside behind the house, threaded with winding paths. House and gardens are open with paid admission, and the steam yacht Gondola calls here on its way across the water from Coniston.
