Grizedale Forest fills the hilly ground between Coniston and Hawkshead, laced with waymarked walking and mountain-bike trails and dotted with getting on for a hundred outdoor sculptures tucked among the trees. There’s a visitor centre, cafe, bike hire and a Go Ape up in the canopy. Access is free on foot or by bike; you pay to park. A brilliant rainy-day option with children, since half the fun is spotting the artworks.
