The Steam Yacht Gondola is a restored Victorian steamer that glides the length of Coniston Water from the pier near the village, silent but for the hiss of steam. Run by the National Trust, it calls at Brantwood, Ruskin’s old home, and at Monk Coniston, so you can step off for a walk or a garden and pick up a later sailing. Trips are ticketed and seasonal, so book ahead in summer. A lovely, unhurried way to see Coniston Water.
