Coppermines Valley is a wild bowl of fellside above Coniston, scattered with the ruins, spoil heaps and old workings of centuries of copper mining under the Old Man. A stony track climbs up from the village, past a youth hostel and holiday cottages set in former mine buildings. It’s open access on foot; the going is uneven and old shafts mean you should stick to the paths. A fine way up onto the Coniston fells.
