John Ruskin turned down a grave in Westminster Abbey and chose instead the churchyard of St Andrew’s in Coniston, where he’s buried beneath a tall carved cross. The church is the village’s parish church, a short walk from the Ruskin Museum that tells his story. Open and free, and his grave is easy enough to find out in the yard.
