Donald Campbell based himself at the Sun in the winter of 1966-67, in the run-up to his fatal water-speed attempt on Coniston Water, and the hotel keeps a display in his memory. It’s an old coaching inn on the hill above Coniston, with a flagged walkers’ bar and rooms. The Ruskin Museum in the village tells the fuller Campbell story. Windermere is the nearest station.
